The
first homes Travellers lived in were bow tents.
They were made from tree branches as a frame and
tarpaulin to keep the rain out. Travellers would
set up the bow tent and take it back down when they
shifted again. Some Travellers then started to use
wagons, a wagon is like a bow tent on top of a cart
with fitted interiors. These were often pulled by
horses and it made life easier for the Travellers
because they didn’t have to build and dismantle
the tents.
Many
Travellers now live in caravans, which are also
called trailers. It’s a much easier way to
live and is the way a lot of Travellers live nowadays.
They usually have more than 1 trailer per family.
Trailers can be on sites (run by the Council or
private landlords) or on roadside camps.
But
not all Travellers live in trailers – some
stay in houses and travel in the summer. All
Travellers are different so they live differently
but it doesn’t mean they should be treated
any different.
